Your site is four separate things wearing one coat
When people say “my website”, they mean the thing they see in a browser. In reality you now own four separate assets that have to keep working together. Knowing which is which is the difference between a five-minute fix and a panicked phone call to whoever built it.
1. The domain name
This is your address: yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com. You register it through a registrar, normally for one to ten years at a time. While the registration is live and paid, it is yours and nobody else can take it. If it lapses, it goes back on the open market. Domains are the one part of this list that can be permanently lost through simple inattention, so the renewal reminder must go to an email address you still read.
2. The hosting
Hosting is the computer that keeps your site switched on around the clock and serves it to anyone who asks. You rent space on it monthly or yearly. If hosting lapses, your site goes dark but your domain and your content are still recoverable. Hosting is also where your site speed comes from, which matters because most of your visitors are on a phone on mobile data.
3. The WordPress installation
WordPress is the software that runs on the hosting and turns your content into pages. Around it sit a theme, which controls how everything looks, and plugins, which add capability: contact forms, a booking calendar, SEO fields, security, backups, image compression. 4. Your content

The two screens you will live in
এই front end is the public site, the thing a customer sees. The dashboard is your control room, reached by adding /wp-admin to the end of your address and logging in. Everything you change happens in the dashboard, and almost nothing is visible to the public until you press Update or Publish.
Get comfortable with the idea that the dashboard is safe to explore. Reading a screen changes nothing. The only buttons that change anything for visitors are Publish, Update, Save and Delete.
Why the padlock matters
Your address should begin with https and show a small padlock in the browser. That padlock means an SSL certificate is installed and traffic between your visitor and your site is encrypted. Without it, browsers put the words “Not secure” next to your business name, which is the single worst thing that can appear beside a clinic or a shop in a customer’s browser. Users and roles: stop sharing one login
WordPress has built-in roles, and using them properly is the cheapest security you will ever get.
- Administrator can change anything, including deleting the site. This should be you, and perhaps one trusted person.
- Editor can write, edit and publish all content but cannot touch settings or plugins. This is the right role for a marketing person or an agency writer.

- Subscriber can only log in, useful for members-only content.
When your nephew offers to “put up the new photos”, make him an Editor. Do not hand over the administrator password, and never share a login between two people, because then no record shows who changed what.
